Polar Express Night at North
Washington
In December,
North Washington Primary students participated in a Polar
Express Math and Literacy Night. Each homeroom made a
train car that was displayed in the hallway. That night
students made comparisons and gathered data on each train
car. Stations were set up in classrooms that involved
Math, reading, and a reindeer craft. Students listened to a
reading of the book “The Polar Express” and each received a
bell as a keepsake from the story. After completing the
activities, the conductor punched their golden tickets and
they were seated for the movie. Parents and children
enjoyed the movie as well as hot chocolate and cookies.
And of course, everyone wore their pajamas! |

Students in
Mrs. Burkhead’s Contemporary Literature class have been
reading The Glass Castle along with an English class
from Marion County High School. The two classes discuss the
book by chatting on-line. The WCHS class participated in a
Chat with Marion County’s AP English in December when both
groups read The Kite Runner. Plans are to expand
the project by engaging in a video-conference so all the
students can see each other as they discuss the novel.

WCES
2nd grade teacher Mrs. T. Thomas has her class using
Kagan strategies teachers learned during the Professional
Development.
In
"Quiz-Quiz-Trade" students pair up to quiz each other
on identifying the common nouns in a sentence. Partners
coach and praise each other, trade cards, and then move on
to another partner. Students completed a sentence editing
activity using the Rally Coach strategy. Partners take
turns reading and writing their answer as the other partner
checks, coaches, and praises.

LOGIC STATIONS
Station
1: "Review Card Game" revolving around the concepts of
parallel lines and special angles such as...corresponding,
alternate interior, alternate exterior, consecutive
interior, consecutive exterior, vertical angles and linear
pairs. (peer tutoring)

|
|
Station 2: "Stories
with Holes" where students were given various stories where
pertinent info was left out and they had to fill in the gaps
(first written then orally).

|
|
Station 3: "Sideways
Math" -- students are given an arithmetic problem (+ - *)
where each digit has been replaced with letters & they must
use deductive reasoning to figure out what digit each letter
represents. (students start out thinking individually, then
share their ideas as a group to solve the problem).
 |
|
Station 4: "Mystery"
-- given a sketch of a crime scene and one paragraph of
info, students deduce "who-dun-it". (Each works individually
to come up with a scenario, then they take turns
discussing/sharing as a group.)
 |
|
Station
5: "Logic Squares" -- students are given limited info
(such as a list of names and a list of pets) and they form a
grid (logic square) in which to organize this info so they
can solve/deduce which pet belonged to who...etc. (think
individually then come to a consensus as a group.)
 |
|
Station 6: "Logic
Line-ups" (Kagan) where students are given pictures of
items and several different scenarios as to how they are
arranged/lined up. Students take turn reading clues while a
different students solves the line-up. |
|
 |
 |
 |
|
*Each
student turns in a paper showing/documenting their
contribution at each station--accountability. |
