Math

Please watch your child's folder for math homework assignments.

Study multiplication facts nightly ~ Quiz on Friday!  We also have a timed addition quiz each Wednesday to help keep those facts fresh, too!

This week we will continue working with congruent (same shape and size) and similar (same shape but not the same size) shapes. We will also be working with identifying and describing lines and angles:

line segment – part of a straight line that connects two points. Line segments are identified by the names of their
            endpoints.         A
B
ray – part of a line with one endpoint; it goes on forever in the other direction. The arrow shows the direction of
            the ray.
line – goes on forever in both directions.

parallel - line segments or lines that never cross, or intersect.

intersecting – line segments or lines that cross each other.

perpendicular lines – line segments or lines that intersect (cross) and
form right angles (square corners).

angle – the place where 2 line segments, lines, or rays meet. This is the inside corner of a shape.

right angle – square corner

acute angle – an angle smaller than a right angle Think: “A cute” little angle.
obtuse angle – larger, or wider than a right angle.

Reading

We will continue our life science unit and will be reading about how living things survive.  Our reading focus will be on locating the main idea and supporting details and making inferences.

Vocabulary your child should be familiar with:

  • organism – any living thing

  • energy – the ability to cause change  Animals get energy by eating plants or other animals.

  • adaptation – a behavior or body part that helps a living thing to survive in its environment.  Many animals
have adaptations that make them hard to see.

  • behavior – the way that an organism typically acts in a certain situation  A bee dances to tell other bees
               where to find food.

  • population – all the organisms of the same kind that live together in an ecosystem Every oak tree in a
forest ecosystem is part of the oak tree population.

  • community  - a group of plants and animals that live in the same area and interact with each other All
the populations in an ecosystem make up a community.

  • ecosystem – all of the living and nonliving things that exist and interact in one place The organisms in an
ecosystem need each other and the nonliving things to survive.

  • environment – all the living and nonliving things that surround and affect an organism

  • habitat – the place where an organism lives

  • pollution – any harmful material, or the addition of harmful materials in the environment.

  • resource – a material found in nature that is useful to organisms Food, water, air, and shelter are resources.  Living things must be able to get enough resources to stay alive.

Grammar   We will continue working with verbs:  subject verb agreement, irregular verbs,  and forms of the verb be.  Irregular verbs are
special verbs that do not end in –ed to show past tense.

Grammar Blast                                 2 Bee or Nottobee
